Parents, ask your children about their Explorer Passports
Explorer Passports will be delivered to schools on Friday, May 18. The Passports give children free admission to parks and attractions in Prince William County. Start off this Saturday at the HCHY EXPO at Pfitzner Stadium, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. View map of activities and schedule of events.

PTSO Spirit Night May 23rd
Join us on May 23 from 3:00 – 10:00 at El Tio Tex-Mex Grill (next to Giant food) for some tasty Tex-Mex food and drink to help raise money for PBES. We have set a goal of raising $500 for our school. 10% of your purchase of food and drink, dine-in or carryout, will be donated to PBES. If 150 PBES families have dinner at El Tio on May 23rd, we think we can make our goal. Friends and neighbors can help too. So spread the word and stop by El Tio on May 23rd from 3:00 – 10:00. Check out this flyer for all of the details.

SOL Testing Calendar
Please note testing days on the Piney Branch Spring SOL Testing Calendar. Testing will start immediately after morning announcements during this period. As always, we appreciate your help in getting students to school on time for their tests, as they cannot join their classmates once testing has started. Strings 2012-2013
Fourth grade students may now sign up for strings! Permission slips have been sent home and are due by May 25th. Students may choose violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Strings is a lot of fun and students will play in several concerts so their family and friends can see their progress. Extra forms can be found on Mrs. Trowbridge's web page. Strings Concert
The Piney Branch String Orchestra will have its last concert on Tuesday, June 5th, at 7:00 p.m. Come on out and see how much the students have grown this year!Math SOL Info from VDOE
The PWCS Math Department has asked us to pass on this information from the VDOE about the upcoming math SOL test, which is slightly different from previous years. There will be more multi-step problems, open-ended answers and technology-enhanced items.2012 Brentsville District High School Basketball Camp
The Brentsville District High School Basketball Camp will be held this summer from June 25th to June 29th for girls and boys rising to grades 3-8. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The final Box Tops for Education due date is Friday, June 15th. Each classroom per grade that submits the most Box Tops will be awarded a prize. In addition, any student who brings in more than 50 will get an individual prize. For anyone who is new to the Box Tops fundraiser, you clip the pink Box Tops from participating products and bring them to school. The school gets cash back for each Box Top submitted. On June 1, 2012, all Parent Portal registrations and online contact editing will be turned off and no further registrations or edits will be accepted until August. Piney Branch follows best practice for the Governor's Nutrition and Activity guidelines for healthy habits. Proper nutrition and increased physical activity promote student health and improved academic performance. We encourage you to eat school meals when you visit your child at lunch rather than bring in foods from restaurants. We also encourage healthy food and beverage items for celebrations. We are registered for the Giant A+ School Rewards program. Our school ID number is 17964. After you register your card, each shopping trip at Giant using your BONUSCARD earns cash for our school. Each month, the amount of cash awarded will be updated on the Giant website. You can track the amount of points you earn for our school by checking your grocery receipt. Our school will receive a check at the end of the program and the money can be used for any of our school's educational needs. You can get more information here. Students must have a doctor's excuse to be kept in from recess stating the nature of the illness and the reason for not going outside. The entire grade goes out to recess together and we do not have additional staff to monitor children in the building. Please also ensure that the doctor's note includes the dates that your child needs to be kept inside. The nurse needs to see the note to confirm. Cardinal Comments

Reminder About Early Dismissal Policies
This is just a reminder that children will only be dismissed through the Kiss and Ride line (from the Activity Room) or Parent Pick up in the Strings Room. If you change the way in which your child should go home, a written note to the teacher or call to the office is required.
If it is absolutely necessary that you pick up your child prior to the end of the school day, a note should be sent to the teacher or you may call the office. Parents or authorized persons must report to the school office upon entering the building and sign out the child. For safety purposes, no child will be dismissed from the classroom without being signed out in the front office. Please have a photo ID for the release of the child. Students will only be released to those individuals listed on the emergency card. If a student returns to school the same day, they need to be signed in again.
Children will not be dismissed between 3:10 pm and dismissal time, unless there is a dire emergency. The procedure for getting a child from the classroom with their belongings and signing them out is time consuming and they should then wait until regular dismissal when the teachers have procedures in place to ensure your child gathers homework, coats, and other necessary materials.
Buses
RIDING THE SCHOOL BUS IS A PRIVILEGE
The staff at Piney Branch does not have the authority to change routes or pick up and drop off locations.
Should a student be reported to the principal, the principal will be responsible for disciplinary action, which may include the loss of the privilege of bus transportation, until the parent, the bus driver, the principal, (and in some instances, an Office of Transportation Services representative) can arrive at an understanding which will correct the problem. The parent will be responsible for the transportation of students who have lost school bus transportation privileges.
